This program, ReNew New Jersey / New York Schools will create innovative and inspiring places of sport by transforming public school athletic facilities in New York City damaged by the storm. Three New York City and two New Jersey Schools have been identified as participants in the program.

Our Plan:
With the help of Perkins+Will, we have worked with the NYC Department of Education to assess damaged schools in NYC. Through a careful assessment of 13 schools, we have currently identified and recommended 3 schools for the program. Now we are moving with our design and construction phase, and will be hosting a number of design charrettes in the coming weeks.

Projects

IS 98 Bay Academy
Location: Brooklyn, NY
The indoor gymnasium floor was severely flood and needs to be completely replaced, as well as the sound system in the auditorium also which needs to be completely replaced.
Beach Channel High School
Location: Queens, NY
Sports are popular at this school. However, outdoor damage to the school (fields for lacrosse, soccer, tennis and football, and tennis courts) and much of the teams' equipment was damaged, due to storage spaces being under the bleachers. Additionally, the school's service space was flooded, damaging machinery.
PS 329 Surfside
Location: New York, NY
Despite the school being completely elevated off of the street, there was two to three feet of flooding throughout the entire first floor, where the administrative spaces were located, as well as space for the youngest children, computer labs, gym, dance studio, auditorium, and cafeteria.

Schools Surveyed

Belle Harbor
Location: Queens, NY
This school needs larger athletic facilities, in particular the gym. Flooding affected the first and basement floors, and damage to the gym/auditorium level is severe. The theater lost its floor and the seating sustained damages. One staff member interviewed, said that student instruments were also damaged. A major chair-lift to the stage was destroyed.
Cavallaro
Location: Brooklyn, NY
The dance studio needs a new floor. The sound equipment was ruined as well.
Berdy
Location: Brooklyn, NY
There was some significant damage to the school, including devastating flooding to their brand new gym, structural damage to their foundation, eroded circuitry, and ruined boilers.
The school has been designated as a Community Learning School, and is considered a model project, meaning that they are fully commited to being a hub for the community.
Lincoln
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Instructional spaces were not affected, but some student and academic spaces experienced damage. There was also damage to the pool, football, baseball, and softball fields, and the field house. The School Construction Authority has provided funding for a new weight center, which was under construction at the time of the storm, and will need repair.
Eisenberg
Location: Brooklyn, NY
The school was closed for ten days after extensive flooding in the basement and first floor. Several classrooms, the music room, library, arts room, and computer lab were flooded and the wooden floor was ruined in the dance studio. New boilers are also needed.
M101
Location: New York, NY
Astroturf on the soccer field, which is also used as a multipurpose space, had to be removed. Otherwise, the school didn't experience that much damage to its facilities.

M113
Location: New York, NY
The school was largely unaffected, but the astroturf inside the track field was ripped up by the wind and needs to be adhered again. The blacktop in the schoolyard could also be redone.
Bard Early College
Location: New York, NY
The first floor gym and cafeteria were flooded and much of the gym, including its floor, padded walls, and athletic equipment, were ruined. Everything non-structural in the cafeteria had to be replaced, as did most items in students' lockers, in the kitchen, and some records and maintenance equipment. Some electrical equipment lasted through the storm, but the compressor and part of the boiler needed to be replaced.
Murry Bergtraum
location: New York, NY
The school did pretty well in the storm, but the outdoor field was flooded and students have not been able to use it since. The drainage system is also clogged with rubber from the astroturf. Locker rooms and bathrooms received about a foot of flooding, but were not extensively damaged.
PS89/IS289
Location: New York, NY
The school's playground and storage shed were flooded, and much of their equipment needed to be thrown out. The playground's mats have not fit back properly since the flooding, and the outdoor drainage hasn't been working correctly. Ideas for the school's restoration include adding more plants to its outdoor areas.
