This is the first place winner of the first round of Build Back Better Tohoku.
Women’s Group of Oshika Peninsula Fishing Union in Ayukawa-hama in Ishinomaki has been making and selling woven bracelets with strings that fishermen use to fix fishing nets since a few months after the earthquake devastated their village. After the earthquake, they realized that they would need to diversify their economic structure in their village to build back their society, and become sustainable. They approach us to create a space for community gathering and serving food made fresh everyday on site to tourists and local laborers. By collaborating with the General Incorporate Association “Tumugiya”, a local organization helping the reconstruction effort in Tohoku, our funding helped these independent women to contribute rebuilding back their village better and stronger.

"Mermamaid", a women’s Group of Oshika Peninsula Fishing Union in Ayukawa-hama and "tumugiya", a group that produce the project collaborating with Mermamaid found a carpenter, who live in Oshika Peninsula, to build Oshika House Last week. Also, on tuesday 21th February, we invited our partner designer group that includes architects and had a meeting with Mermamaid and the carpenter in order to discuss construction method, budget and schedule.
The problem is that the planned construction sited may be a area where the local government would redevelop. Therefore the house has to be movable type building in case the local government decide to pull up the heights of roads and sites or execute land readjustment in the area. The party, Mermamaid, tumugiya, the carpenter, and the designer group now carefully consider construction plan and soon calculate the updated budget for the project.

On 6th March, "Mermamaid," "tumugiya" and a designer team "Achirabe" had a meeting for proposing a logo design of "Mermamaid." To finish the logo, it needs each member of "Mermamaid" to choose their own color and draw the shape of logo mark. On the day, 2 of 7 members could not attend the meeting, so the completion of the logo will be within the next week. In this update, we share the photos of the meeting.
Finally, "Mermamaid" and "tumugiya" (the company) have found a builder in Tokyo who can undertake building the house and have enough time.
At first the company met a local carpenter in Ayukawahama in Oshika Peninsula and he showed his willingness to undertake building the house. However, because of technical and scheduler problems he called off building, and the company had to fine another carpenter or builder to build the house. In Oshika Peninsula, there is almost none carpenter who can undertake further deals. Thus the company decided to ask builders in Tokyo.
The builder who will be a partner with the company is now estimating costs of the project. After that they are going to start building the house.
In addition to that, the architect and designer team updated a new draft of the house.
