KEY DOCUMENTS

BACKGROUND
Union Beach has 735 students in their K-8 program, all located on a single campus. Superstorm Sandy pushed water up the nearby bay, flooding the school and the surrounding area with up to one-and-a-half feet of water. The building had been repaired and opened for the remaining weeks of the '12/'13 academic year. However, there remains work to be completed at the adjacent sports fields.

All school facilities are open and available for use by the community with various organizations using space in the buildings. Community athletic organizations as well as the public at large have access to the outdoor areas. The Henry Hudson Trail, a nine-mile-long bicycle path that runs from Aberdeen southward through Union Beach to Atlantic Highlands, bisects the campus.

PROJECT
The project will include the repair and improvement of athletic spaces throughout the school.

HIGHLIGHTS
12.15 - Identification of design team members for the project.
01.17 - Site walk through with design partner.
02.05 - Project design review meeting with client.

ARCHITECTURE FOR HUMANITY
The role of Architecture for Humanity is essential throughout all the project development stages. The first step is to analyze the feasibility of the project in order to design an appropriate project that relates to the existing context and the community can take full ownership of the project. Architecture for Humanity is managing the design, construction and construction administration of the project, to ensure that the project represents the community’s objectives and is developed within schedule and budget. Architecture for Humanity also performs a post-occupancy evaluation in order to document the sustainability and use of the project by the Memorial School for many years to come.
