TRESTLES 2.0

CONCEPT.
At TRESTLES2.0 it isn’t about the beauty of the design, the design functions as a way to emphasize the beauty of TRESTLES.

TRESTLES2.0 is in its essence the same area, the interventions make sure the users experience TRESTLES on a new more intense level. For instance the train will be hidden, therefore only revealing nature.

TRESTLES2.0 is build with inexpensive recycled materials, we use the existing elements to restore and improve TRESTLES by using the locally available water and creating our own electricity.

TRESTLES2.0 offers users the opportunity to restore the environment in a playful way.
After all those years of using the area, the time to do something back in return has arrived, it’s time for TRESTLES2.0!

TRESTLES, the users and the train work together to live in harmony. TRESTLES can’t be restored without the users and the users can’t enjoy TRESTLES without restoring it.
By coexisting, the environment will be restored in honor.
It’s all about TRESTLES, that’s why we intervened as minimal as we could to emphasize important elements of the area. The design is purely functional with the opportunity to confront the users with the precious area they are surrounded in.

PATHWAYS
Restoring the old pathways meandering trough the area will be done by the users. By spreading seeds, in this manner the old pathways will remain visible in a flourishing way and remind the users of what once used to be the pathway.
The new pathway will be fully accessible and reveals its natural surroundings in a complete new way.

With a few viewing platforms along this route sightlines are created, which generate a more intense experience of nature. These viewing platforms allow users to take a moment of rest, to enjoy the surroundings, learn about the area and show how it has changed over the years.

The arrival route is an introduction to TRESTLES2.0, this introduction contains the following elements:
A few platforms introduce the important aspects of TRESTLES2.0, the surroundings, the surfing area as well as the passing train.
Notion of the predicting wave triggered by the train, the wave passes before the train passes.

The departing route is all about gaining awareness, in this route we want to remind users that it is important to respect their surroundings, and to give her back what she deserves.

RESTORING WETLANDS
To achieve this restoring process we use two basic elements. We use the train and the visitors, this train who used to be life threatening, now is a healing resource in this area.
The train became the heart and engine of this area, which now is able to irrigate the plants by water, With the speed of this train a pump will be activated and pump water from its groundwater source. This train is capable of starting a natural cycle, thereby helping to restore its original ecosystem.
The water is flowing along the old paths, which were made by the visitors crossing trestles.
The users are needed to spread seeds, seeds of threatened plants which characterize this area.
The users spread the seeds and the train is spreading water.
Using this concept the area will be restored and improved.

The visitors will restore and improve nature while traveling homewards or outwards by spreading a handful of seeds. Using slingshots users can also spread these seeds, these are mounted on the platforms. These seeds will slowly grow into adult plants, through means from rain and our irrigation system (by train). Since it is not always raining, we use the train for irrigating the environment. With this system, groundwater will be brought to the surface by several pumps and then this water will be spread by motion of the train.

TRAIN USE
These trains are producing energy by spinning a car wheel, that runs along the side of the train, this turning speed will be converted into energy by using a dynamo. This energy will be used for propel several pumps, which will cause the water to be spread, by spraying it above these plants and seeds. This pump will ensure that the groundwater is being spread by spray, but this pump will also fill the gully which will meander through the nature, to ensure that this area will be foresee with enough water. These gullies are actually made from the old paths which were originally made by the users of this area.

TRAIN DANGER
Crossing the railroad in the present situation is a dangerous process, which also is very awkward for cyclists and people using a wheelchair. We’ve improved this situation by adjusting this railroad crossing to a much more gentle slope, with less difference in heights.

To ensure a safe railroad crossing, we introduced a visual warning seven seconds before the train arrives at the crossing. This wave will remain while the train is passing. To ensure that this playful wave won’t be seen as a playground, the distance from this artificial wave to the railroad will be 10 feet. This visual blockade is being designed as a wave, make sure you spread the word, this is the only wave you don’t want to ride!

RESTROOMS
We’ve also provided some restrooms where you can refresh yourself at this railroad crossing.
The drinkwater fountain (5.) refreshed with a filter and the toilet (8.) flushed and powered by the train.
This railroad crossing is in fact the only safe en
official crossing in this area and will be a recognized icon in TRESTLES2.0.
This railroad crossing is safer than before in a simple and playful way. It also has the ability to cross this railroad easily by bicycle or using a wheelchair. The gully beneath this wooden platform also offers the possibility to wash your feet. When this artificial wave passes this platform, the users can wash their hands by simply putting them through the wave.

When the visitors pass this railroad crossing, their path will be separated into two ways. Namely a route towards the area for beginner surfers and a route towards the area for experienced surfers. We’ve chosen this separation because we don’t want the beginner surfers to interfere with the experienced surfers.

CONCLUSION
To sum up, the visitors and train are being used to restore and improve this area. Every passing train will automatically irrigate the area. And the visitors will, by using a few educational points, gain respect for the environment by simply perceiving it. The visitors can easily restore the area by simply spreading some seeds while they are actually walking the new path. By using some cheap, simple interventions we will restore this area, emphasize this area and improve this area using this design.
