A Site Specific Experiment designed the Bangkok Green Home as a multi-family residence in Bangkok, Thailand. A complex program developed to accommodate an extended family comprised of four individual families. All four families will share certain spaces, while two families need to share other spaces while maintaining some individual privacy for everyone. The design incorporates twelve high cube containers, six prefabricated modules and one additional container as a rooftop swimming pool with garden.
The multi-family residence is laid out in an “L” in plan over four levels. The upper level enclosed spaces are set back to allow for exterior terraces. Several strategies were employed that are responsive to the tropical climate of Thailand. Openings are carefully considered to take advantage of cross-ventilation and to provide vertical ventilation at the living spaces. Climbing plants provide shading on the west and south walls. Other environmentally friendly features include recycled products such as insulation material on exterior walls, the use of grey water and a self-composting septic system. An edible garden is also provided. The project design is complete and construction is anticipated to begin soon.
Project successes include the design’s responsiveness to the tropical climate as well as inclusion of other sustainable strategies. Project shortcomings include its overall size and scale and lack of portability.
