We have been informed that all of the materials needed to construct our Prototype have arrived to the Contractor's office and the Surveyor sent over the 3 complete survey's for our sites. Now we are determining when the best time for building our prototype will be so that we can get sponsors to join us while we observe the contractor's team build the structure.
Just heard word from JE Dunn that most of the materials for the prototype build have come in to their location... We are just waiting on one or two main parts and then we can schedule a build day to assemble the Prototype.
Last Friday we had a team meeting with the structural engineer (Michel Couvrette, C20 Engineers) and the contractor (Jarrett Keim, JE Dunn). We reviewed the Preliminary drawings to work out some kinks and determined what our next steps will be. Jarrett is shopping the preliminary materials list around to his subs and has been granted permission for delivery and storage of materials to occur at the JE Dunn office. We will then assemble the Prototype there and determine any further revisions that need to occur.
New files have been uploaded to OAN depicting some of the redlines that were generated along with structural modeling images that Michel generated for us. Because we are using some materials in a "non-standard" method, the model was abstracted down showing basic information based on the design. We will learn a lot more about the system once the prototype is built.
We completed our preliminary CAD drawings for the Shelter Prototype. They are being reviewed by our structural engineer while we begin getting the materials list ready for purchasing the needed supplies for construction.
A PDF of the drawings has been uploaded to the files tab.
We are in the process of speaking with a couple of different contractors in order to bring them on board with the obtaining of materials (at contractor pricing) and for the construction of our prototype. We are having good feed back from our contacts but still await final agreements to be made saying the contractor is on board with us. At the moment we are only talking with the contractor about the prototype because we want to have the design built and further developed prior to asking a contractor to take on the construction liability associated with a permanent installation of the structure.
Conroy & Associates have graciously submitted an exciting proposal to provide site survey services for the 3 MARTA sites that are currently being looked at for implementing an OASIS shelter. The Proposal can be reviewed by viewing the project files.
On August 20th AFHA hosted a successful Birdhouse Social Auctioning off Designer Birdhouses by local Atlanta Talents. The Birdhouse Social is our primary/major fundraising event of the year and this year a large portion of the funds raised will be allocated to the OASIS project. A Budget Committee meeting has been scheduled for the beginning of October to determine how much we can physically allot to OASIS versus needing to help with basic chapter operations. The OASIS Budget (posted in the files) will be updated accordingly once those funds have been allocated.
The winning design for OASIS 2010 submitted by SSA + D, Sarah Green and Daniel Echevarria is currently in the construction documentation phase. The Google SketchUp images above are renderings of Sarah and Danny's design compliments of one of AFH Atlanta's founding members Andrew Telker. Along with getting the documents ready for Permit and Construction, we are currently drafting up an adoption agreement for the maintenance of the shelter by members of the community. We are working with a local Structural Engineer and have a Contractor on board and ready to go once we have permitting complete.
Our next steps include:
~ Finalize Adoption of the Shelter.
~ Finalize CD's.
~ Final approval from MARTA.
~ Submission for Permit with the City.
~ Solicit donations of materials and financial sponsorships.
~ Site installation.
During our process with the Adoption of the 2010 OASIS Shelter we have come into contact with many people with positive feedback and desire for adoption of other shelter locations that have been suggested by the community. We are very excited about discussing things with MARTA and the possibility of including some of these locations in our 2011 ARTIST CALL which will be announced very soon.
Architecture for Humanity Atlanta conducted its selection panel for the Oasis 2010 Design Competition. Special thanks to Connie Krisak (MARTA), Shane Totten (SCAD, USGBC), Jerome Martin (AIA), Garfield Peart (Atlanta Center for Creative Inquiry), and Shelton Davis (Deign Cannon, Industrial Design) for their participation.
And at long last, your winner is: SSA + D, Sarah Green and Daniel A. Echevarria! Congratulations to Sarah and Danny!!! Our next steps are to begin the permitting process, continue raising funds, and procure building materials. Our hope is to have the prototype built and installed this year!
Additional design awards go to:
Honorable Mention: Crystal Havens, Brian Campa (Atlanta)
Honorable Mention: Move Stop, Mike McGrath and Thomas Hardy (Atlanta)
People's Choice Award: ARKTX (Washington, D.C.)
People's Choice Runner Up: Thomas Speer (San Diego)
Stay tuned to the project page and the chapter's Facebook page for more updates and details as we move along.

AFHA met with the three neighborhood planning associations in which the benches and shelters will be installed. Reception of the project was unanimously enthusiastic. Community members were excited to hear of the project, to participate in the project, and offered valuable information about their community's identity and possible sites for future installations.
***NOTE TO DESIGNERS***
Mechanicsville (NPU-V, Windsor Street and Richardson Street Site) has used the locomotive train as branding imagery for a number of community initiatives. Designers should feel welcome to use this imagery in their designs.
SAND (NPU-W, Moreland Avenue and Sky Haven Road Site) is the organization that represents the neighborhoods of the NPU-W district. Their official logo is a trolley car. Designers should feel welcome to use this imagery in their designs.

AFHA's meeting with MARTA was a success! MARTA representatives exhibited excitement about the project. They have many bus stops that need benches and shelters. And they were happy to hear about our proposed project.
MARTA provided AFHA with several key resources including a list of requested bench and shelter sites, access to MARTA design criteria, and procedural requirements for installation.
MARTA also stated they will support AFHA's effort and participate in the process as much as they can.
As a result of the meeting AFHA will be holding it's first design charette for the project on Saturday, September 19th, at 10 a.m., at Emory Unversity's Master Planning Studio Conference Room.

This weekend February 25th, Architecture for Humanity Atlanta, JE Dunn, and some of our major supporters for the Oasis Project will be meeting at the Lifecycle Building Center for the construction of our first prototype for our MARTA Bus Shelters. This will be our guide for tweaking the design before submitting for final MARTA approvals and permitting.
