Santa Elena de Piedritas School

Overviewteamupdatesworkspacecalendarfiles

The Santa Elena de Piedritas School is part of the Enel Cuore Community Empowerment Program. The project is currently being developed in Peru by Architecture for Humanity with the local support of Endesa –Peru

STATUS: Project Completed

CONTEXT

Piedritas is a remote rural community located close to the town of Talara in Piura’s region. The community has one of the lowest levels of human development in the region and limited options to have access for basic education. In the year 2003, the group Endesa (Eepsa & Edelnor) sponsored the construction of the first and only school in the area with the help of the community. The Santa Elena de Piedritas Primary School had secured the land of a 2,000 square meter plot with a 970 square meter built area. However, the current infrastructure is deteriorating due to the high temperatures of this arid area. Further construction implementation is needed in order to improve the existing educational facilities and increase the number of prospective new students, as the existing school buildings have become too small for the 85 children attending the school.

PROJECT LOCATION TALARA - PERU

PROJECT

The new infrastructure is estimated to increase the attendance to over 100 students in the coming years, and eventually each grade will have their respective classroom. The building for the primary school is intended to have the option to be extended for the prospective growth of the school with the possibility of building a full primary school with all levels. The pre-school building will consist of the construction of 2 classrooms with their toilet replacing the existing wooden classroom, which will be reused as a school canteen.

The new project includes:

  • 1 New primary school classroom.
  • 2 Pre-school classrooms.
  • 1 Computer lab.
  • Pre-school toilets.
  • Exterior shading structures and landscape works

ARCHITECTURE FOR HUMANITY

The role of Architecture for Humanity is essential throughout all the project development stages. The first step is to analyze the feasibility of the project in order to design an appropriate building that relates to the existing context and the community can take full ownership of the project. Architecture for Humanity is managing the design, construction and construction administration of the school, making sure that the project represents the community’s objectives and the project is developed within schedule and budget. The role of Architecture for Humanity also consists in post-occupancy services in order to build a quality infrastructure that will be sustainable and used by the Piedritas community for many years to come.
