In the fall of 2010, threatened with the demolition of the community space known as La Casita, the Whittier Parents Committee staged a 43 day sit-in to win the rights to the community space located on the grounds of Whittier Elementary School in Pilsen. Shorty after winning the rights to La Casita the Whittier Parents were informed that the space was not fit for children to occupy.

This project is a collaborative design effort between Whittier Parents Committee and Architecture for Humanity Chicago to rehabilitate La Casita and improve the overall quality of the environment in and around this important community space.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: To educate; the new building will reveal itself and promote environmental literacy. By encouraging interaction and collaboration, the building will serve to educate. Using healthy materials and passive systems, the project will create healthy and inspiring indoor and outdoor spaces. The building will utilize both passive and active solar technologies to reduce nonrenewable energy demands. To emphasize the importance of water conservation the building will utilize recycled rain water and demonstrate best management practices on site. The site will incorporate on site gardens to demonstrate natural cycles, urban remediation and provide healthy and nourishing food.
