Unidiverse workshops

The ideas in this booklet can help when organising workshops with the people that you are designing for, to have a better understanding of their approaches to space and their needs.

Introduction

Unidiverse is a tool in the form of a game to explore coexistence, cohabitation and
flexibility where the user combines different actions and makes a model in order to
reveal personal approaches to space.

It is a playful way to question how we think about doing things in a space and can be
used in different ways: as a tool for brainstorming or for the designer that wants to
engage with users to discover their individualities and design accordingly. It can be
used by people sharing a space to discuss their personal approaches, to recognise
differences, find a common ground and as an icebreaker to get to know each other.

'The use of games by groups to explore values, ideas, behaviours as a
communication function, gives the participants a better understanding of themselves
and others. Games used in conflict resolution facilitate communication between
dissimilar or opposing groups.'
Sanoff, Henry. Community Participation Methods in Design and Planning, John Wiley & Sons Inc., 2000, p. 70

Unidiverse is not conceived as a set of “fixed” instructions, even if there is a guide
suggesting ways of using it, there is scope for users to also develop their own versions.
