Project Description: Providing a market for the area’s bountiful farms is a formative part of Harrisonburg’s history. As the demand for locally-grown produce and food grows, a thriving farmer’s market has grown in Harrisonburg over the past 30 years. When the Farmers’ group was dislocated from their location in a downtown parking garage, the local housing authority provided seed money for the construction of a permanent pavilion next to an open, public green area.

A key stipulation was that the pavilion could not reduce the available parking spaces. Blue Ridge Architects worked with a grid of posts oriented on module that accommodated both a standard parking bay and vendor sales areas. The pavilion accommodates 40 vendors and has a center area for performances by local musicians on market days. The roof steps higher in the center so that vendors with large trucks can back under the overhang. Lighting utilized fluorescent lamps with the correct color rendition to showcase the food.

The project’s success has led to a call for additional vendor spaces and a plan to create and expand and adjacent park so that the pavilion can be used as covered seating for concerts and other performances.
