The Dheisheh Refugee Camp is a deprived environment where the buildings are basic, the streets are narrow and there is a lack of green space. As a result, there is nowhere for children to play, or green spaces to be enjoyed. During the winter, it is very cold and throughout the summer it is very hot, suffering from water shortages.
My proposal is to regenerate the rooftops of the Dheisheh Refugee Camp with the addition of roof gardens and roof top parks. These will provide important green spaces, transforming the skyline and improving the quality of life for residents. The roofs will significantly reduce the need for air conditioning in summer and can provide a degree of insulation in winter. The green roofs will slowly spread and where possible link up using bridges and platforms.
Brightly coloured cooling towers will be built, providing a cheap way to passively cool the houses whilst injecting colour into the skyline. They will comprise of a lightweight aluminum frame wrapped in coloured fabric. Each one will be hand made, so each is unique and they will vary in complexity according to the structure to which they are fitted.
The roof top parks and football pitches will also be incredibly important for the children of the refugee camp by providing a safe, fun place to play.
My proposal creates important opportunities for residents to improve their own environments. This might involve painting the existing water containers a bright colour, growing vegetables on the roof or erecting a dew catcher to provide extra water. The result will be a new skyline full of green and colour; something to be proud of.
