Shake it Up: Designing earthquake-safe buildings

The Architecture for Humanity Earth Day workshop, held April 22, 2010 at

Prospect Sierra Middle School, focused on buildings and the importance of their construction when an earthquake hits. We addressed the recent earthquake in Haiti and Chile. Students worked together in teams of three to design and build a "school structure" for an earthquake zone. The group challenge was to design and build a 'structure' using skewers (ie: framing) and jujubes (symbolizing structural connectsion). Team ideas weree tested for design criteria AND strength and the teams presented their designs in a group discussion format.
