Pac Rim Studio | DESIGN/BUILD A SCHOOL: To teach indigenous oceanic technologies, a Polynesian wayfinder has requested a boatbuilding and navigation station on a coastal site.

We will design/build a Pacific Navigation Centre together with the Maori Architecture Centre at Unitec, New Zealand. Hekenukumai Puhipi is a renowned Maori navigator and traditional (boat) waka builder based near Taipa in the far north of New Zealand. He has built 26 waka, ranging from full scale waka taua (war canoes), to waka hourua (double-hull voyaging canoes), to waka tiwai (smaller travelling canoes). We will be designing a Navigation Centre with him for his coastal property and are arranging a build component–a structure on his coastal land and/or a waka. Mr. Hekenukumai will give a public lecture in late February to kick off the project. [time: approx. 1 March – 20 June 2010]
