Architecture for Humanity Minneapolis-St. Paul designed a master plan and prototype home for the Give Us Wings Mari Village Project. For more info: http://www.giveuswings.org
Project Summary:
The Mari Group in Uganda consists of 26 families in which at least one family member has a disability. Polio, malaria, birth defects, poor nutrition, and untreated injuries leave people with physical challenges. These challenges are not easily accepted by many of the people in their town. The Mari members are often looked at as inferior or frightening.
Successes and Progress:
They have supported each other for 12 years, despite ridicule, loneliness, physical pain, lack of opportunity and basic human needs.
They now live in horrific, violent, slums in small dark rooms that house up to 18 people. There is no privacy, sanitation, or respect for their differences.
Mari Village Logo
They have been facing life without the slightest dream that their daily struggles will one day ease.
They have come together to try and provide some communal support.
Project Needs and Goals:
Together with the courageous people of Mari Village, Uganda, we will bring
health, economic growth and now a safe place to call home.
Together with these hardworking, brave families Give Us Wings will begin to build Mari Village:
Medical Care:
Most people in the Mari group cannot afford basic medical care, let alone the care needed to adequately
address their disabilities. Currently Give Us Wings supports medical care for the person with disabilities. With medical care for all of the members of their families the Mari members can focus on moving forward, growing th
eir own businesses and being able to support their families.
Project cost: $150,000
The new Mari Village will be lush with fruits and vegetables, beauty and singing, dignity and hope and love...
Mari means love ....
Common Market:
A common market will provide an attractive, professional setting for their businesses. They will be able to easily access the businesses and help each other to be successful.
New Homes:
26 beautiful new small homes that each include a separate kitchen, bathhouse and latrine. Each family will have a kitchen garden and organic farming training.
