GREEN Architecture for Humanity

Architecture for Humanity uses the power of community-based design to effect positive change for marginalized communities. Our work is inherently green. Our design fellows work directly with locals to create localized architectural solutions, consistently turning to sustainable design strategies to create healthy and cost-effective structures for the communities that they will serve. Local labor and materials are utilized to execute these solutions, resulting in structures that are truly designed from the grass roots up.

Additionally, we utilize open source technology to connect people and distribute information internationally through the Open Architecture Network. Our aim is to provide individuals all over the world with design solutions that they may implement and alter on their own - using local materials, local labor, local knowledge and building local skills. This paper-free distribution system empowers local communities to grow, to learn, and ultimately sustain themselves and their environments.

We believe in applying sustainable principles at home as well. While we already practice many sustainable living habits in our office, we've decided to take the next step and become a Certified San Francisco Green Business. We're learning a lot along the way and thought we would start an OAN page so we could share some of these valuable resources with you!
