Usilampatti is a city with a population of about 6000 and solid waste generation of about 75 g per capita per day. 100 youth volunteers organized campaign to educate the residents, schools and colleges about segregation of waste and recycling of wastes. The project took place in 18 residential wards of Usilampatti town, 10 schools and one college in Usilampatti, Madurai District, Tamilnadu, India. The 5-14 ages 80 youths, 15 to 18 ages 20 youth’s volunteers participated. Totally 100 youth volunteers participated. The youths convened the planning meeting and action plan evolved. The youths purchased different coloured Dust bin boxes and prepared the Bit notice (1000) and posters (500) on waste management, air pollution and climate change. The youth volunteers organized campaign to create public awareness about segregating waste in to degradable and no degradable waste and need for segregation. 100 youths conducted door to door campaign in 18 wards (2000 residents) of Usilampatti and 100 schools, one college about segregation of waste and it provided dust bin boxes. Five seminars were conducted on role of c community in city clean up and solid waste management for residents of Usilampatti municipality. After the global youth service day celebration the project, the project activities will be continuously doing by youth volunteers, residents of Usilampatti town, community based groups like women’s Self Help Group, youth group, Eco club National social service volunteers will carry out segregation of waste, waste dump in the dust bins. Demonstration of degradable waste into organic matter, posters sensitized the awareness on solid waste management education.

BENEFICIARIES: The Usilampatti town people awareness about solid waste management and pollution problems. The local resident’s knowledge about solid waste management problems, degradable and non – degradable waste and the need for segregation. Clean up campaign was regularly organized in Usilampatti. Since there are a large number of small scale industries within the municipal limits, large quantities of plastic carry bags are being dumped in the dust bins. So, to reduce the amount of plastic bag waste, which are otherwise subjected to land filling. There was a time when people reused things over and over again. They never thought of using something used once and then throwing it away. People knowledge about vegetable waste is – degradable e waste, plastic, aluminum foils etc are non degradable wastes.
Every one should segregate the domestic waste into degradable and non – degradable. Every one should properly maintain his / her vehicle for a longer life. Every one should understand the importance of recycling and reusing materials and encourage the children to do so. Municipal authority set up waste processing and disposal facili9ties. If improves the existing land fill skite3s for further use and make site ready for operation. Further, youth may gain leadership skill, maths skill, communication and behavioural skill youth developed self esteem.
The young youth led the Global youth service day project. The youths selected the issue, planning the programme and evolved strategies to action plan. 2000 urban people awareness about solid waste management. 5000 students directly benefited. Management of waste and control of waste generation are the most critical problems facing the society. Increased urbanization generation more wastes. The disposal of this waste is becoming a global problem. These wastes are generally disposed of without proper planning. The land area for waste disposal is increasing and the air and water become more polluted, waste management is very much necessary in the present day to prevention pollution of the environment and its natural resources like air water and minerals. Improper collection and disposal of wastes can cause serious problems. The project motivate educate, train the residents about collection waste segregation of waste and solid waste by recycling and converting the degradable waste into organic matter. Reduce 80% diseases are caused by unsafe and impure water and unhygienic conditions. The women and children’s were directly benefited from the project. The youth volunteers learned the life skills development. Paper pickers, bottle collectors, waste collecting people easily get waste from this project. It will help to income generation activity.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: Management of waste and control of waste generation are the most critical problems facing the society. As the population keeps increasing, more people move to cities. Increased urbanization generates more wastes. The disposal of this waste is becoming global problem. These wastes are generally disposed off without proper planning. The land area for waste disposal is increasing and the air and water become more polluted. Planning for disposal of waste is necessary to prevent pollution of the environment and soil. Planting of trees to make healthier environment and sustainable future.
