The rehabilitation and extension for Izvoarele Medical Center is part of the Enel Cuore Community Empowerment Program. The project is currently under development in Romania by Architecture for Humanity.

CONTEXT
Izvoarele is a community located in the Giurgiu County with a population of 3,804 inhabitants where Enel has already partnered with local municipalities to implement educational programs related to responsible energy consumption. It is composed of six villages: Chiriacu, Dimitrie Cantemir, Izvoarele, Petru Rares, Radu Voda and Valea Bujorului. Giurgiu is a rural area with an unemployment rate of 30%, much higher than the average rate in Romania of 7.3%.

PROJECT
Currently, the only existing medical facility in Izvoarele operates daily for 10 hours and has only one doctor. There are no dental clinics in the community and patients have to travel 30km to the city of Giurgiu where the closest clinic is located. The project aims to rehabilitate and expand the Izvoarele Medical Center by building a new dental clinic.

ARCHITECTURE FOR HUMANITY
The role of Architecture for Humanity is essential throughout all the project development stages. The first step is to analyze the feasibility of the project in order to design an appropriate building that relates to the existing context and the community can take full ownership of the project. Architecture for Humanity is managing the design, construction and construction administration of the school, making sure that the project represents the community’s objectives and the project is developed within schedule and budget. The role of Architecture for Humanity also consists in post-occupancy services in order to build a quality infrastructure that will be sustainable and used by the Izvoarele community for many years to come.
