Project Name: Dry-In House
Project Type:
Architecture
Project Mission/Goal:
Respond to our growing need for clean water, power, shelter, healthcare, education
Address humanitarian crises
Project Description:
The Dry-In House is a mass-customizable affordable housing concept proposed to address the housing crisis facing the decaying neighborhoods of New Orleans. The use of automated technology enables a homeowner to actively participate in the design of the home, while also keeping it affordable. The house is proposed to help the residents attain a higher standard of living through quality design and construction, while promoting community involvement and environmental sustainability. We seek to prove that smart use of technology and a dedication to social responsibility can bring good design and affordability together gracefully and make a positive impact on a large scale.
As originally proposed by field office, the Dry-In house starts with the future homeowner performing a few key design tasks on a worksheet, such as the house’s silhouette and room layout, under the advisement of an architectural consultant. This worksheet is sent to manufacturers to produce the customized home. The Dry-In House, is 1500 sq. feet with one, two, or three bedrooms, and one bathroom. It is design to fit on a 30’-wide lot, a standard lot size for New Orleans.
The goal is to come out with a per-square-foot price that rivals that of a FEMA trailer. This way, house serves as an alternative to the inefficient and toxic trailer, providing a low-cost, high-quality housing option that is safe and permanent. The first prototype house is in construction in the neighborhood of Hollygrove. The design and construction process are set to be quickly and easily repeated and primarily performed by community members.
