Oleleshwa Primary School, Kenya:

Project Type:
6) architecture

Project Mission/Goal: (Choose one of the following)
1) improve the human spirit
3) respond to our growing need for clean water, power, shelter, healthcare, education

Project Description:
Communities in Kenya and Canada are working together to build the Oleleshwa Primary School in the Maasai Village of Ewaso Ngiro in Kenya. The village has a lack of access to education and the living conditions in the area are very harsh. The existing schools are very far from the village and too expensive for the students to attend. The community is dedicated to improving education and donated the land for the school and constructed the required fence on the property in 2009. Construction is currently underway as the villagers desire a school in which students, male and female, can learn and have opportunities for the future.

The building itself with have a staff room, a library, six pit latrines, a kitchen and dining hall, and water reservoir in addition to the four main classrooms. To address some of the challenges the students face, the school will provide a meal each day and will provide health information in regards to safe sanitation practices, sexual development, and illness prevention. While attending school was previously an impossible dream for children in the Ewaso Ngiro region, this new facility will provide education and greatly improve the possibility for student success. Issues such as lack of electricity and clean water, food shortages, early marriage and pregnancy, and maternal and child mortality will hopefully be left in the past as the new school is constructed and completed.
