Overviewteamupdatesworkspacecalendarfiles

Camillus House provides hospitality and respect for life through direct services of food, clothing, shelter, addiction counseling, behavioral health and job training, and health care to persons who are poor and homeless in South Florida.

Architecture for Humanity Miami has volunteered architectural/design services to Camillus House in order to renovate a compound of transitional shelters that will be the home of clinically ill homeless people. The compound is made up of 6 buildings that are in poor condition. AFH Miami will help Camillus House plan for a better environment to their future residents.

BACKGROUND:

[Target Population] Mentally-ill former homeless men & women who are part of the Camillus House Program
in Miami, Florida.
[Budget] Camillus House currently has a budget of $17,000. However, Camillus House has invited proposals for
a vision for the project that may go beyond the stipulated budget. Once the schematic design has been
established and can be communicated visually, allocating funds to cover construction costs will become a
much easier task.

DESCRIMTION OF CITY
(Please see drawings package for site map & site plan)
The project site is located within a quarter mile to the west of Liberty City. In order to provide you with local
demographics and description of urban qualities found in the surrounding neighborhood, we’ve considered
Liberty City’s history and statistics.
Liberty City is a neighborhood within the City of Miami, Florida, United States. It is listed as "Model City" on
many Miami websites; however, the name is rarely, if ever, used by anyone, especially local residents and
Miamians.[1]
The area houses more than half of Miami-Dade County's nearly half a million African Americans and Afro-West
Indians (as of 2000 Census). Liberty City's boundaries are roughly as follows: North 79th Street to the North,
North 27th Avenue (Unity Boulevard) to the West, North 41st Street to the South, and Interstate 95 to the
East.[2]
Liberty City is served by the Miami Metrorail at four stations: the North side Station on NW 79th St, Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. Plaza Station on NW 62nd St, Brownsville Station on NW 52nd St, Earlington Heights Station on
NW 41st St. Currently, construction is underway to expand the Metro from the Earlington Heights Station to
the new Miami Central Station.

DEMOGRAPHICS:
In 2000, Liberty City had a population of 23,009[3] and 43,054[4] residents, with 7,772 households, and 5,428
families residing in the neighborhood. The median household income was $18,809.87. The racial makeup of
the neighborhood was 3.04% Hispanic or Latino of any nationality, 94.69% Black, 0.59% White, and 1.68%
Other races (non-Hispanic).[3]

THE BRIEF:
[Program] Starting with these base program elements, develop and expand the program as you see fit to
establish this facility as the permanent home for mentally ill men and women thriving as citizens within our
community, configurable to the elastic needs of evolving groups through the duration of the life of these
homes. Keep in mind that this facility will be a model for other facilities that will also house a similar clientele.
There are existing buildings on the property, hence the word renovation.
One of the major concerns is privacy within these spaces, as there are four duplexes comprised of two 1-
bedroom units that will house two tenants each. Two other buildings are one-story 2-bedroom units. These
will also house two tenants each. The total number of tenants that will be housed at Good Shepherd Villas will
be twenty tenants.
