increase awareness of the environment and/or address climate change

Project Description:
Shortlisted for the Line of Site Competition (Brief 2), Bicycle Tree is an idea for a bike rental structure that occupies virtually no ground space. The original proposals were intended for two sites in New York; Columbus Circle and Union Square. However, the idea should be seen as a prototype as it can easily be replicated and used anywhere, in particular where there is a lack of open space and a need for more clean transportation. Manhattan is only one such place. The prototype could also be used where people have their own bikes but need to securely store them. Having them off the ground means they are more secure. The overall purpose of Bicycle Tree is to encourage more people to use bicycles as a form of transport in crowded cities. The intention is to help the environment without diminishing city-dwellers' access to open space. This proposal involves the use of a pulley mechanism to hang bikes from a steel structure. The mechanism could be operated by a person or potentially even a coin machine.
