School is located in the Commune of Saut d’Eau, approximately 75 Km from Petion-Ville HQ. It provides for approximately 340 students, under the supervision of Joseph Léon Diefette the director of the school.
Physical Description:
School currently has two main structures on site, an office and a church both out of concrete masonry units blocks and concrete; along with six small classrooms built out of wood and metal. The previous structure from the original school is still on site and completely destroyed by the earthquake. The church is being used for extra classroom space/storage.
There is an existing cistern adjacent to the church, where poorly built gutters direct rain from the roof of the church to the cistern. The cistern suffered minor damages with about 6inches of water inside; showing no sign of leakage. The site is on a fairly flat surface, surrounded by three to four houses and a main road that the community built with sand that was purchased in Port-au-Prince.
There are no bathrooms. Children are escorted to the surrounding area to use the bathroom. The original latrine located behind the church has been destroyed also by the hurricane.
Recommendations:
The site would need to be cleared of the debris from the original school, in order to rebuild a new school. Students are sent home when it is raining, for the current facility cannot keep them sheltered from it.
There is an opportunity to update the current gutter system in order to capture more rain water into the cistern.
Challenges:
The school is located at least 45 minutes walking distance from a main road at the top of mountain through trails; therefore a solution will need to be drawn up for transporting materials to the site.
