It was important that our design of canned goods be expressive of Architecture for Humanity's work, have a hunger-related theme, and be simple in geometry.
The design premise of the Canstruction event was to build a structure made entirely out of non-perishable food items. This led to several design innovations by the Architecture for Humanity : DFW team:
1) An internal set of structural columns made out of bulk-sized green bean cans, which were then tied back to the single-wythe, canned "cladding" using packaging tape.
2) Delineation of AFH's projects worldwide by utilizing Folger's-singles coffee packets; the leftover packets were connected to form a bookmark down the center of the structure.
3) A bed of Ramen noodles infilled the 10' x 10' project boundary, creating a bed on which to display two copies of "Design Like You Give A Damn."
On the map side of our structure are projects that Architecture for Humanity has completed, or are in progress. On the front side is a book that catalogs our organization’s work.
As a local component of Architecture for Humanity, we believe that design CAN make a difference in the lives of those who most desperately need it. Where resources and expertise are scarce, innovative, sustainable design is imperative to fulfilling basic human needs of food and shelter.
