Created for the Baan Lee Suan Fair in Bangkok, Thailand in 2008, A Site Specific Experiment (in conjunction with Buatalah Studio) designed this model home. Intended to present an alternative method of living for Thai families, the design of the house was based on the four Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle and renewable. The design resulted in a two storey house created by four 8’ x 20’ containers and prefabricated modules.

Intended to accommodate a family of three people, the first level contains the communal living spaces of the kitchen, dining area and living room, plus a powder room and carport for a smart car. The second level contains two bedrooms plus a full bath and a work space. Interior spaces are grouped together while a layer of screens on the exterior provides privacy, ventilation and shading. Walkways connect interior to exterior spaces that include space for growing food. The project reuses grey water.

Project successes include the development of a model that is responsive to Thailand’s climate. Project shortcomings include portability of the system, which would be involved to demount and ship elsewhere.
