Designed by the Mexican architecture firm M2ATK, the Container House is a weekend home for an artist. The structure is wholly created using three 8’ x 20’ shipping containers, stacked on three levels and staggered. The first floor contains the living, a bathroom and kitchen space, the second floor contains the bedrooms and the third floor contains the artists’ workspace. The staggered configuration provides an outdoor terrace on the second level some with shading/weather protection.
Circulation from one level to the next takes place along two exterior stairs hung from the structure, a design decision that preserves interior space. Full-sized windows/sliding doors replace the shipping container exterior metal at one end on each level to provide a spacious, light-filled interior. Other amenities include heating and climate controls, telephone and internet access systems and high quality furniture.
Project successes include its portability. Project shortcomings consist of the need to walk outside to circulate from one level to the next, a condition not practical for full-time use.
