DeMaria Design Associates designed this mixed-use live/work project in Venice, CA. It includes fourteen shipping containers to create two stacked residential units above space for an art gallery at street level. An accessible roof deck provides ocean, mountain and city views.
The fourteen shipping containers, seven per floor, sit on a structural steel framework and concrete base and are painted a bright lime green. Twelve of the twenty-eight bays are opened to provide floor to ceiling glass, both fixed panels and operable windows. Fifteen panels remain solid while one was removed at an exterior stair.
Project success includes using shipping containers to create an “iconic architecture” in a very public location. Shortcomings are difficult to discern due to a lack of available information regarding the project details.
