Project Description:
Question Box is a collaborative between users, providers of information, researchers, and nonprofits. The users ask a wide range of questions, including cricket scores, paddy farming advice, codes to download songs on their mobiles, homework questions, university exam results, train schedules, commodity prices, and where to get a personal loan.
The Operator answers the Questions. She speaks the local language as well as English, inter-mediating the wired world and the village world. Working from home, the Operator can use her computer training while keeping close to her family.
Question Box is currently piloting in various regions of Kampala, Uganda (Bushinye and Mbale) as part of a joint pilot with the Grameen Foundation's Applab. The original Question Box pilot is still in operation, in the Indian villages of Ethida and Poolpur. Both villages are outside of Noida, which is close to New Delhi.
