Humanitarian Container City | Jakarta

This project is a master plan for a humanitarian housing project located at an old port in Jakarta city. The development is comprised of recycled shipping container modules, modified sensitively with vernacular elements of traditional Javanese housing. Its main purpose is to provide relief housing for victims of earthquakes, common in this area due to the 'Pacific Ring of Fire' running under the entire Island of Java.

There are two housing types:
- the nuclear family unit, designed to house up to six people
- the extended family/ or amenities unit, designed to house up to 24 people or be adapted to become a public amenities core. This core arrangement is a rehabilitation of existing slums in the area. The positive elements encouraging social interaction have been extrapolated and combined with a far higher standard of amenity .

Each isolated unit can be deported to other sites if necessary and 'plug in' to existing infrastructure and vernacular housing arrangements. This is viable and each of the cores are self contained to suit their specific purpose.

The roofs are to be made out of thatched bamboo with teak framing and collect enough rain water to sustain the family. They also work to provide shading from the harsh Indonesian sun. These will be constructed on site with local labour and materials.
