Led by Architect and Instructor Derek Hoeferlin in Spring 2008, a senior undergraduate architecture design studio at Washington University in St. Louis as part of the CITYbuild Consortium of Schools, designed adaptive re-use and historic rehabilitation plans for the historic Franz Building on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard in the Central City Neighborhood of New Orleans. Partnering with the Good Work Network (a small business assistance non-profit who recently purchased the 1915 structure) and with MIT Urban Studies and Planning students, the team placed FIRST in the 2008 JP Morgan Chase Community Development Competition. The $25,000 prize went directly to the non-profit as seed money to implement the project. Also, the studio assisted the Good Work Network in securing a $40,000 grant from the Greater New Orleans Foundation in addition to being one of nine finalists for an American Express grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
