In the year 2006, in Guatemala City, 80 million documents were found in an ABANDONED BUILDING. This documents belong to the Police Department, and contain important and confidential information of the 36 years of armed conflict in Guatemala. This files were declared Historical Archives and are being digitalized to ensure that the truth of this period of violence is known.
Kikotemal' Rik K'aslem Memorial ("live in harmony" Memorial") tempts to be a response to the heritage of our Civil Conflict. The violence and the silence are the starting point to go back to our memories and say to all the citizens that this will happen "never again". It is among the culture and education of the new generations were the culture of peace must be established.
"The monumentality shouts for those who has been silent..."
The architecture is intended to attract the most visitors possible acting as a main communicator of this truth. The size of the building represents the size of the conflict and how this has been silent. The strategy for the development of this project is to encourage conciliation and peace among the different parties that need to be involved economically, culturally, and socially.
The content of the building is for the past, present, and future of the country. A museum is established for showing everyone what happened, a cultural and community center is included to the present development; and, finally, a education area is also included for future generations of police and citizens to value human rights and peace.
