Title:
Global Advocates Corporate Office

Concept:
To create a space that reflects the firm’s corporate culture and values, though reclaimed, sustainable and easily disposable materials.

Approach:
Global Advocates is a firm that is focused on environmental advocacy around the globe. Innovation and collaboration are important to the way the firm operates. Meeting areas, tele-conference rooms and “meeting by chance" in a hallway will allow this firm to be as collaborative and team oriented as possible. The main circulation path or “race track” around the core of the building, creates ‘in-between’ spaces. The use of a “globe shape” circulation path, will allow the spaces in-between to house the conferencing and meeting areas that support the firm. A unique light fixture that is made up of recycled water bottles and LED lights are suspended from the ceiling along the main circulation path. The space is divided equally amongst the three divisions with each having their own community space and meeting areas. To improve the overall health of the office, it was essential to incorporate living systems, within the floor and wall of the building. Living systems will improve the indoor air quality of the office, and bring people closer to nature.

Site:
One Byrant Park New York, NY

Materials:
All materials were selected with the environment in mind and will be obtained within a 500-mile radius of the site.

Estimated Budget:
$1.8 million dollars
appx $76 per sq ft

BENEFICIARIES: The office occupants and the overall environment, due to Life Cycle Assessment and sustainable material selection.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: Sustainable Strategies: Since my design approach was to design a space based on the users values of sustainability and practicing what they preach to their employees and visitors, I wanted to make sure that all materials came from a 500-mile radius of the site. The materials had to be reclaimed or have recycled content in them and low VOCs if not any. Another aspect in my material selection was to make sure that the materials would be easily disposable as biological nutrients to the earth or as technical nutrients and be able to broke down and be made into new product (cradle to cradle philosophy). Giving the users access to natural light via circulation closer to the core and users offices along the perimeter, fresh air via raised floors, and connections to nature (biofilia), through living systems located throughout the office, in the floors along the perimeter of the building, behind the reception desk in wall and in the ceiling in the cafeteria/community space. All of these strategies of sustainable design will improve the indoor air quality and overall health and well-¬being of the users.
