Traditional carpenter is working with traditional tool to shape old timber for the deck.
Traditional carpenters in Japan apprentice under master carpenters for years before they are even allowed to use small hand tools. They are very skilled, and even build a whole shrine without nails! We are so lucky to have such talented carpenter like Wake for our project.

Watch the progress of the deck!
"Keyaki" that Autumn is talking about in this video is called zelkova in English.

After 4 months since the East Japan Great Earthquake, Hikado Marketplace turned into a beer garden to celebrate the opening of the community deck!
From 1:24 to 1:53, Higashi-san (the guy in a orange t-shirt) says "Everybody is excited to have this community deck. This marketplace is going to become the new hub of this neighborhood. We're going to help each other to rebuild our community."
And here's a little taste of the celebration! (Watch out your speaker volume. This is a music video!)
Enjoy.
