PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
In order to create a more structurally stable dwelling for the people of Pakistan, our group created a design that focuses on the use of gabions. Gabions are simply explained as stone filled wire baskets that act as both stable and efficient building units.
The gabions used will not only be filled with stone, but also include a small layer of compressed straw or hay on the interior which will serve as insulation for each of the housing units. By incorporating the baskets into the design, the rebuilding process in Pakistan will allow for the excess of rubble from the earthquake to be incorporated into the design. In order to add to the stability of the structure an initial trench will be dug and used as a foundation for the building. The foundation will be lined with a double layer of gabions so that the overall building is anchored down securely creating more immovability in case of another earthquake.
The incorporation of gabion design solves two key issues at hand: cleaning up excess raw material displaced by the earthquake while creating an efficient, easy, and safe construction method for the people of Pakistan.
