Alvin’s shotgun had two additions over the years: one, a perpendicular gable, and the second, an in-fill that created a flat roof at the terminus of the valley made by the first addition. Resolving this, the second addition was removed.
After demolition, the foundation of the extant house would have to be repaired and a new foundation built for a second perpendicular gable to accommodate the needs of the family. The cost and labor of the foundation, framing, and envelope repairs were ultimately determined to be unnecessarily expensive and difficult for a common rehab, and as a result, the home was demolished.
To continue progress on Alvin’s house, and to keep our tight schedule of volunteers and funding, the City of Biloxi allowed us to rebuild the same house on the same footprint, as it was before the storm; hence, a New Construction Rehab.
