PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The mobile home—housing’s most “affordable” model—can be made more energy efficient and qualitatively rich with relatively minor changes in siting and design. The critical needs addressed here are 1) Orientation and 2) Protection of the building envelope.

Travel through the rural landscape...and you will see it: the deteriorated and dilapidated homes of the poor. When their shelters have finally given in to elements, what are their opportunities? There is but one: the Mobile Home.

The current model—even when brand new—is substandard. First, the manufactured home is no Asset; it looses value when it leaves the lot, and within 5 to 10 years, the value is completely depleted. Second, the assembly simply does not resist the elements of nature: gravity, wind, rain, and sunlight. Third, the homes are introverted in design and removed from the ground plane. This disallows connections to the outdoors and endangers families in the very likely event of a tornado.

Current owners with means and a bit of know-how have found simple ways to make their trailers last longer. They have added porches and overhangs on the entryways; others have built post and beam structures sheltering the whole home. And these appendages are not superfluous, nor are they luxury: These additions simply bring the mobile home closer to a standard of “decent, affordable housing.”

Provided here are three INSTANCES which begin to develop upon the architectural opportunity. (2003)

[Project Background: This project began during the development of the “Green Mobile” with Michael Berk. Where the “Green Mobile” proposes a solution within the industry on the front end (a political challenge), this one asks, "what can be done now, in the interim and within our Culture of Building, to make these homes more livable?"]
