Municipal Bus Shelters

Peace Corps volunteer and designer Eric Wiley was given the duty by his community to design the new bus shelters to replace the broken and deteriorated Soviet-Era ones throughout the 27 towns and villages of the municipality of Karlovo (pop. 58,716 in 2006).

The shelters are constructed from tubular steel (in 4 cm and 6 cm square sections) and white and grey polycarbonate panels (sheets are 6m X 2.1m). The design used the size of the polycarbonate panels to create a standard bay (2m X 1.5m X 6m) - from which the overall size of the bus shelters could be modified depending on their location and expected number of people. The standard bus shelters built in the towns and villages are 6 square meters, though at one busy bus stop there is a shelter which measures 10.5 square meters.

In December 2004, 18 total number of bus shelters were built at a total cost of $7,883.

And currently, in 2007, smaller 3 square meter blue and white bus shelters are being built along the highways (I'm not certain of the numbers for these).
