The GRAND HOUSE STUDENT CO-OPERATIVE is an incorporated, non-profit, housing co-op, with the goal of demonstrating sensitive aesthetic and environmental design, promoting innovative living and exploring both traditional and alternative construction methods.

Formed in late 2004, the GRAND HOUSE CONSORTIUM is comprised of university students and professionals from Cambridge, Ontario and beyond, with the main objective to build a Ten-Bedroom Student Residence. We have secured property in Cambridge’s historic downtown, and construction will begin in early summer of 2007.

The 4,500 sqft building will provide affordable accommodation, a common kitchen, living space and bathrooms. It is a wood construction, straw bale building on a difficult site. The build itself is intended as an educational tool to raise awareness about alternative, healthy and sustainable materials and systems. It is an experiment in developing a methodology for combining academia and industry to provide affordable, net zero energy housing in a downtown core. As a student co-operative, innovative solutions are found for funding, Ontario building codes and public awareness. Check our website as we progress with our build over the summer and fall of 2007 to chart our progress.

Cheers,
The Grand House Team.
