Blue Lupin Community Library

Overviewteamupdatesworkspacecalendarfiles

A first of its kind in Western Uganda, the Blue Lupin Library will provide access to literary material and the internet to the more than 300,000 inhabitants of the Kanungu District. An initiative of the Nyaka AIDS Orphans School and located just a short walk from the school, the library will house three age specific reading rooms, a general lending room with computer access and finally, an assembly hall capable of hosting weddings, graduations and community gatherings of up to 500 people. The design of the Library is an iteration of the existing Kutamba AIDS Orphans School located in the neighboring Rukungiri District. The U-shaped plan with the assembly hall in the center and the library components as adjacent wings offers a natural courtyard for large gatherings to comfortably convene in. Similar to the Kutamba School, materials include locally crafted clay brick, hand-sawn eucalyptus, and of course, local labor.
