After Katrina, many elderly suffered due to lack of mobility. They have been suffering since due to lack of medical infrastructure throughout the Gulf Coast. The Katrina Community of Care is part of a growing network of Katrina Houses of Care providing basic medical and mobility services for the aging.
The Community of Care is set on a large parcel of land in Opelousas and will include four phases. The first will be single family, unversal design homes. The second will be a large community center which will also serve as a center for evacuees. The third will be a multi-family, low-income, apartment complex. The fourth phase will be future expansion of housing to the north.
