Calhoun McCormick Gallery and Studio

Overviewteamupdatesworkspacecalendarfiles

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

After Katrina, photographers Keith Calhoun and Chandra McCormick lost about 2/3 of the work that they had done documenting New Orleans culture over the last 30 years. The project has three parts.

The first, and recently completed, was the repair and renovation of a double shotgun on Caffin and Chartres that will now serve as the studio and gallery until funds are available for the new building. 15 students over Spring Break in March of 2007 completed a significant amount of the repair and created the south gallery. On Friday, March 16th, their art was consumed in the new gallery along with crawfish, turkey necks, pigs feet, potatoes, corn, and beer.

The second phase will be the construction of the main building on Flood that will serve as their home, a public gallery, a community dark room, and a teaching facility.

The third will be the Back House which will serve as a residence for visiting artists.
