March has been a very productive month The scheme has been rationalized in terms of construction and pushed right through to Design Development. With Axel and Rui(our Lesotho Design Fellow and Volunteer from New Zealand) creating a physical model of the site , critical decisions were made regarding the existing levels and how to enter and access the building. http://openarchitecturenetwork.org/projects/kick4life The roof has become an even more integral part of the design. Not only does it unite and provide shade to the external gathering spaces around the building (to the entrance, to Esperance's area, to the spectators veranda and the players area) but its been developed to harvest all the rain water ( approx 1 million litres per year) which will be filtered for clean drinking water. The rainwater on the pitch will also be harvested to be used to flush toilets and irrigate the landscaping. This has been advanced with the help of Kobus Carstens of 'freewater', who has kindly offered his expertise on a pro-bono basis. Industriously chasing our DD deadline, we've become aware of how necessary this roof will be, and conscious of tapping into people on the outside world, I made contact with my local radio station at BBC Radio Ulster (In the north of Ireland). Two lingering concerns... I actually built a half scale model of the thing on Sunday(took about 2 minutes) and found that movement of the two top beams which had been a concern of mine while drawing, cancelled out because the panels overlap and the cut opening of slot in the front panel and back panel holds them in place. Also, if wire hangers can be cut and bent and pierced through the vinyl over the lower beams into the ground (on each side, where the panels tuck under) it can provide further stability. Another concern was the moment where the two panels would meet. Two models are in developement Urban that promote privacy and the development of dense neighborhoods with shared green space and wind/solar energy with strong emphasis on mixed use (commercial and residential). The clusters arrangement create back courtyards of shared green space with obligatory landscaping with native fruit trees.Water management is with rain cachment and shared cisterns. Country side clustered around centers of excellence (schools, community buildings, local hospitals, farm coops) In each case the idea is to allow these prototypes to be built side by side to promote community developement and shared facilities while respecting the need for privacy. The cultural dimensions is addressed two ways: With vernacular elements such as Haiti archtypical ventilated masonry, wrought iron works, reduced window areas for cooling. It's been a while since someone updated you on the excitement happening in Khayelitsha and for that past six months I've had the honor of front row seats. Since the last update, we went to tender, selected a contractor, started construction and for the first time, the world was introduced to 20 Centres for 2010! Construction is now in full swing and we are scheduled for completion in just two short months, November 6th to be exact! I have been posting construction photos regularly and adding additional info as it comes in, I hope you've been watching! Our team is incredible! It includes a contractor name Clive who is flexible, dedicated, and community oriented. arG, our local heroes, have offered their time, both day and late, to give Grassroot Soccer a design that honors their vision. Our personal motivation is the GRS team!!!! Watching James, Xolani, and the rest of the team work their magic on the field... chills down you're spine. Kiiloooo! is now part of the AFH vocabulary! With assistance from GRS and arG we are collaborating on a community workshop that will result in a beautiful mosaic mural at the entry wall. It is a project that will express the true spirit an incredible collaborative effort. Our latest project report by arG (08/20/09) included the following details: The majority of labor is provided by the local area, issues within the neighboring The site is well organized and clean, all safety requirements are met and no incidents have been noted. In I Che (which is “greetings” in Bambara, the local regional dialect), from Michael Heublein, the new design fellow in Bamako, Mali! This is the first what I hope will be many exciting updates on our newest Football for Hope center. My colleagues here in West Africa have received me with more generosity than I ever could have expected – they've fed me, sheltered me and literally given the shirts off their backs for me (there was a minor Kenyan Airways-luggage problem and I didn't get my bags and clothes until 2 days after my arrival). This is my second voyage to this part of Africa, and I do feel like I've returned home. I have only been working on this project for a little over a week, but have found that the project was in great hands before my arrival. During the month of August, Kimberly, Eugene, Christine and Claire, working from San Francisco and Cape Town, submitted the first and second Schematic Design packages (images of this design can be seen on this website). We've all received several rounds of feedback from both streetfootballworld in Cape Town and AMPJF in Mali. Youssouf Berthe, our new Architect of Record in Bamako, has helped with a preliminary pricing report for this design. Aided by AMPJF and Mr. Berthe, I will begin my stay here by visiting the site and several important examples of community centers and schools in the project's area to further understand the region's culture and environment. At the moment, all of us are working to make the final adjustments to the Schematic Design and quickly move this project into the Design Development phase, which should happen early this month.
