Questioning the idea of turning a product into another product, we became interested in the idea of systems. Inspired by nature’s example, we wanted to create a system that reduced one of problems of mattress waste. After researching different facilities that “de-manufacture” mattress by hand, we came with the conclusion that it is a very simple process that can be adopted by anyone with a garden, or used by a city in different areas.
Since the foam is the only non-biodegradable part of the mattress, and can be chopped, sliced and re-used in several different ways, we decided to focus in the heavier body of the mattress. By using the idea of a seedling bed (P2S01.jpg, P2S02.jpg), we realized that bedspring corrodes much faster in contact with soil until its eventual decomposition (P2S03.jpg).
Our “product” intends to facilitate the development of a living system. This system embodies the principles of deep ecology and informs us about the forgotten potential of our collaboration with nature. It acknowledges that humans and natural systems are one and nurtures our sense of caring for a living organism. It also informs us about the bigger benefits of plants and trees. By doing so, it encourages more sensible and sustainable behaviors.
