PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
INTRODUCTION
While mattresses make up only a tiny fraction of overall waste stream, they present unique problems. Since they contain a variety of materials, they’re not as easily recyclable as wooden furniture or metal appliances.
Once the mattress arrives at the landfill, it is crushed into a compact form and stockpiled. Not only they take up a significant amount of space, but also cause increased wear and tear on landfill machinery. Oftentimes, equipment gets damaged because springs get tangled up or pop out of the mattresses as they’re being compacted.
According to re-use concepts the basic idea is to divert mattresses from landfills, avoiding dismantling and focusing on low production costs, resulting in a new affordable consumer product, extending the lifecycle of the mattresses. This thought was the starting point of the DreamOn sofa project
PROCESSING AND PRODUCTION
Once the mattress is kept out of the landfill, the process consists in the following steps:
1.Required materials: discarded mattress, serge cloth, metal tube, sofa buttons, clips;
2.No mattress deconstruction needed;
3.Higienic Cleaning & Sterilization: 100% chemical free step process to eliminate Dust Mite Allergens, Molds, Mildew, Spores, Lice, Scabies, Viruses, Bacteria and Bed Bugs;
4.Mattress folding: mechanically or by hand (template assisted);
5.Structure: Welded tubes with powder coated finish;
6.Assembling: Fasten the sofa buttons to the structure through the mattress in order to attach it;
7.100% cotton interchangeable cover gives a personal touch.
