PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As the competition suggests, in area of great need are opportunities where sports can be used as a catalyst for social change. Football is the culture of Brazilian youths. Informal times and informal places provide an interesting setting to cultivate football skills but at times it could be hazardous. The Sportables pod and Glowing Linesmen will give a chance for the youths of Capao Redondo to play football in a safer and more fun site. Providing better equipment to the youths will also give a chance for them to improve their skills faster and stronger. The power of play is full of potential. Creating a community access point to share this power and passion is what they need.
The approach to this project was to retrofit a used container pod to create a series of equipment pods to provide new sports products to the children of Capao Redondo to enhance their football experience. The container will be housed on a trailer for the ease of transportation and demounting. There are two types of pods, one is dedicated to the players while the others house the field equipment. The pods can slide out from either side of the container, depending on the location. They players’ pod dispenses a ‘cube’ that contains a jersey, socks and shoes. The cubes are arranged in columns by the shoe sizes. When a player is done with the equipment, the crews will place the cubes back into the column from the top. The equipment pod on the other hand houses all the on field equipment, including the Glowing Linesmen beacons. When the field is demarcated, the beacons will act as linemen on a football field. When a ball goes out of bounds, the beacons along the goal line or touch line will light up. When a goal is scored, the all the beacons light up. The can also be rearranged for large gatherings and festivities. There will also be a generator to power lighting equipment at night and also a series of solar panels will be located on top of the container to collect solar power. A small office area will house a small crew that will maintain the whole container pod.
