During the fall of 2005, John Mary Lugemwa, the founders of Hope Integrated Academy, along with the Uganda Rural Fund envisioned providing quality education to the children of his home village, Kyetume, Uganda (about 40 km South of Masaka). These children, many of which have fallen victim to AIDS, have grown up with no hope for a future.

Hope Integrated Academy’s progress began with having successfully raised funds to build a 5,000 SF school with 14 rooms. Construction began in 2006, and the academy today provides a primary school and after school programs, as well as a successful community library and computer lab. Other initiatives include a piggery program, soccer jerseys, textbooks, and sponsorships for children.

Future plans include the implementation of water and sanitation facilities in conjunction with the Minnesota chapter of Engineers Without Borders in June 2008, and Solar panels with the EWB chapter at Virginia Tech University, December 2008. Vocational education is expected to begin with addition of new facilities in 2008.

The long range plans call for expanding the school population to 500 students (possibly double this size), and the integration of a vocational program, Hope Integrated Academy expects their expansion to include:

BLOCK I (current building, 14 rooms) 

Two co-enjoined structures 
Each structure is 7 rooms 
10 classrooms 
4 offices in the front arch 
Temporarily two rooms at far right 
(when you are facing the building) 
are used for community library and 
computer center. This leaves us with
 eight classrooms. 
One of the office rooms will be temporarily 
used as the school medical clinic. This 
leaves us with three offices. 

* This building might eventually become 
the administration block. The rooms are 
small and not really very good for classrooms.

To date, the current school building is 
too small too accommodate the class sizes 
needed.  A new facility will need to provide 
adequate space for classes. There is also a 
need for dormitories for both students and 
teachers. The available site is approximately 
2 acres, directly south and east of the 
existing school. Architecture For Humanity's 
charge, is to develop designs for the new 
facilities as well as a master plan for 
the site.
