Welcome two new Design Fellows Luvuyo(luvuyomfungula@architectureforhumanity.org)and David (davidpound@architectureforhumanity.org)! Luvuyo is assisting in the Cape Town Studio and David will be focusing on the Ghana project.

AfH can bring is recruiting additional design fellows. Additional design fellows can be hired immediately. The decision needs to be made to bring the next fellows on now or after the world cup since relocated to Cape Town between June and August will be expensive due to flight cost and housing rates.

Yingli Solar:

  • Yingli Solar meet with the team last Friday to sort out the solar power needs and define the options for applications for projects ( underway and in-design)
  • Francis Hillman from Yingli, was joined by Kobus Carsten of Free Water to coordinate technical aspects of solar/water systems for the Rwanda project and for prototypical unifying elements. Francis and Kobus will be providing follow up information on speifications and costs.
  • Reviewing options and costs for implementation at various site. Some of these options include: Lighting pitches with integrated PV, battery and lighting poles and heads which the team recommends for Kenya and Namibia, along with solar applications for pumping water collected from pitches for flushing toilets and irrigating site landscaping.
  • Coordination is ideal in early stages
  • Big Box:
    Killian arranged a tour of work yard and meeting with Willie, Marketing Director, and Jasper, Managing Director, of Big Box Containers . This Friday afternoon.The AfH team saw containers modified and outfitted for school kitchens, preschool classrooms, fesitval abultions, farm worker housing, wine bars and offices, etc....including in process work and finished products.
    The tour provided and excellent opportunity to sit down and exchanged the work of each of our companies/organizations as well as kicking around some of the ideas for FFH Centres and even detailed questions on modifications, strength of panels, stacking and so on .Theylearned that there are no limitations to how the boxes can be cut up or oriented so long as the frame at the perimeter is left intact. Details about the painting and framing techniques were also discussed.

    Yes, the centre is up and running, but we are still waiting for the Final Completion certificate which is expected next week.
    Final Completion in South Africa happens 90 days after Substantial Completion.

  • Mike and local architect, Youssouf, are in final negotiations with contractor Bengaly
  • Health and Safety provisions may be added cost that was not completed accounted for in Bengaly's tender price even though it was part of the tender documents and understood to be part of the tender price. These provisions are unusual for typical workers in Western Africa and the team is working with the contractor to make sure that it is enforced and executed on site.

  • Killian and team are working on the greywater systems for the building

  • Team coordinating local Rwanda holidays and approval time with design and construction schedule
