OBJECT OF PLAY

The Football for Hope Center is a village. The center is composed by organic clusters of structures, organized in plan like unfolded footballs. The structures are built with the least amount of material possible to contain the greatest volume of space, just like a football. The structures are made of local wood poles, simple metal connection hubs, concrete slabs and skins built of a variety of materials. The skin can be corrugated sheet metal, reclaimed wood, translucent plastic, cloth panels and even found objects. The 36 unfolded hexagons make up of eight different spatial experiences. There are community gardens, paved plazas, shaded central plazas, open structural units, shaded structural single-units, shaded structural double-units, enclosed single-units and enclosed double-units that make up the communal setting. These structures can each be built in less than a day and can be built very cheaply. They do not all have to be enclosed at once. This community can grow over time. It is economy of material and speed of construction that make this system work.

The football pitch sits at the heart of the village. On the south side of the field, the shipping crates are stacked and used as an interactive manual scoreboard and as a secure storage space. The seating is shaded by a simple corrugated metal roof that doubles as a water-collecting surface and as the support for the sites solar array. The backside of each of the grandstands acts as a stage for the community. This center is meant to support a variety of users and events at the same time.
