Goals For Change

The genesis of our concept design grows from the central core of football as a generator. Socially becoming the base of a community, this small scaled stadium has an array of activities that surround the pitch. With a focus on the game and field activities the periphery holds some of the amenities for the community. Organized below the gradual sloped grandstands, program for one side are for group events; classrooms, event space, and an internet café. Slightly more private, the other houses the health clinic and information offices. The ends of the field wrap around with sculpted earthwork that can be transformed into more program as the needs for the centre expands. As designed, these geometric forms radiate out and are reinforced by stone walls and earthwork that doubles as inclined seating for the field, water catchment system and a location for storage re-appropriating the storage containers for the turf field. Keeping with a universal design approach the facilities are accessible to all through a system of ramps that reinforce the geometry of the forms.

A sustainable approach; as fostered in a global sense for community building is a supplemental focus for this design. By creating this activity hub, many features are enhanced by simple conditions. The geometric design for the site creates a dynamic water catchment system directed and filtered through a sand filter and ultimately reclaimed from a well. Excavation for the sand filtration area below the field transfers the soil to allow for our earthwork forms. The built forms constructed with local materials utilize passive ventilation, trombe wall heat transfer, and natural day lighting through openings between grandstands. Innovations for flexible photovoltaic panels may be employed to harvest electricity from the fabric solar shades strategically located over the grandstands to allow for shade during peak hours.
