To implement a high tech facility into a low tech reality, we explored interactions between environmental principles and local materials and emphasized the connections between spaces, site and neighborhood. The former hall, which represents the spirit of reunion, has now become a succession of functionalities from a radio station to a kindergarten.

A window opened to the sidewalk like the many shops on the street will give a direct access to Ghetto FM, a channel dedicated to youth and peace. In order to sustain the organization, the Front place is dedicated to commercial activities with a fully equipped Cybercafe and exterior spaces for itinerant vendors. It will stand on structural walls under a flat concrete roof. Like in any other construction in the slums: only very light corrugated sheets will be posed for exterior walling for the need of integration.

The walk is a spontaneous invitation to discovery shaded from the northern sun by a continuality of colorful veils maintained by concrete columns. First stop will be the Youth Hall, an open place for the many teenagers attending the Training Center. Masonry is commonly used in Kenyan buildings and strong bricked walls will secure the interiors. Along with the library placed on the very center, it will be the core of the building. Most of the site is occupied by playfields and playgrounds. We acknowledge the kids fondness for soccer and outdoor games by giving them all the spaces needed. The site is also designed for many representations which could bring hundreds.

The main roof made of corrugated sheets is a uniformity which will shelter the most important functions. From a very rational and flexible structure using modules of 30m2, we managed to keep the costs under 150 000$. We chose to use natural ventilation methods with the easiest techniques: the remaining space between our giant roof (supported by metallic triangular frames) and the brick composed ceiling will cool down the temperature inside every space. Rain water will be collected to the front space tank, and treated, to the collectivity disposition.

Through the past 6 months, we were touched by SIDAREC’s active community located in the heart of Mukuru Kwa Njenga and are feeling very proud to participate in a project that has strong potentialities to change children’s lives. We explored spaces where they can meet to have social activities and find a safe place to gather and learn.
