REPORT #25

PROJECT: CIM
PROJECT NUMBER: 10020
DATE: 2013-06-11
WEATHER: Sunny

SUMMARY:

Construction has started on the concrete shear walls located along the front and back of the building. Installation of formwork to pour the upper half of the interior shear wall has also started. Installation of rebar for the ring beam has started, while the installation of the surface mounted electrical conduit on the ground floor has finished.

Several material issues should be noted. Firstly, a shipment of block was delivered to the site, and after testing several of the blocks, it became evident that the blocks were not of a suitable strength to be used in construction. The blocks were rejected and sent back. Secondly, after formwork was removed from a recently poured shear wall, areas of the concrete revealed pocketing that will need to be addressed, both in repairing the wall, as well as in the overall procedure for pouring the remaining walls.

ATTENDEES:

Sven Kalim (Architecture for Humanity) (AFH)
Julien Jackson (AFH)
Taïna Mayard (YCF Group, S.A.) (YCF)
Lirode Deplat (YCF)
Lizzie Blaisdell (Degenkolb) (DK)
Kate Evarts (AFH)
Marco Durán (AFH)
Guy Henry Mazile (electrician) (DFE)
Jenn Eason (Giving Global) (GG)

CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS:

-Poured concrete @ grid lines B, between grid lines 2 and 3
-Poured concrete @ grid lines 7 and 10
-Installing formwork @ grid line 4
-Installed ring beam rebar @ grid line 1
-Installing ring beam rebar @ grid line 4
-A delivery of blocks was rejected for use in construction after several tests revealed that they were substandard
-Surface mounted electrical conduit installed in rooms 108 and 109 (grid lines 1 through 7)
-No engineers were on site last week; photos were taken by AFH and sent to DK for approvals
-Construction was stopped for the day on June 10, 2013 by YCF because of company restructuring
-Kate (AFH) and Marco (AFH) met with Sr. Philomène and M. Bernard to discuss the design and technical information regarding the toilet block
-Kate (AFH) gave a site tour and project overview to Jenn Eason (GG)

CONSTRUCTION NOTES:

-BROKEN BLOCKS: Blocks can remain intact without affecting the concrete quality (compared to what has already been done); YCF can continue to lay block without chipping out the transverse piece of concrete at the end of the blocks
-POCKETING: pocketing was observed on the shear wall columns @ grid line B, between grid lines 2 and 3; to be assessed by DK, and repaired by YCF; YCF to wait for Julien (AFH) before making repairs
-Several issues with the concrete pouring procedure were identified at the shear wall on grid line B, between grid lines 2 and 3, resulting in pocketing where the second lift begins. The columns were poured from too high (concrete must fall from less than 2m in height), and the concrete was poured in three lifts, rather than the specified two. The pouring process shall be as follows regarding shear walls on grid lines A and B: YCF to pour concrete in two lifts – the first to the top of the intermediate chainage, the second to the top of the block/bottom of the ring beam. Formwork shall be constructed to allow sufficient access to place concrete in all areas of the walls and columns, and in a way that allows concrete to be poured from a height of less than 2m. Rebar must be cleaned, and the top of the concrete must be keyed, roughened, and cleaned prior to pouring the second lift, which can happen as soon as the previously mentioned actions have been implemented, and the formwork is properly constructed and ready to receive concrete.
-STAIR A: Construction has not commenced because YCF has requested additional information; AFH to provide response to requested information
-Columns on the second floor located on grid lines A and B will be poured with the same detail as on the first floor. Interior columns on the second floor (grid lines 1, 4, 7, 10) will be poured flush with the block wall, as specified in the original details

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

-The electrician (DFE) was on site to finish installation of conduit on the ground floor, as well as make corrections to the already installed conduit on the ground floor.
-Electrician (DFE) must provide overall electrical plan for building
